Chateau of Azay-le-Rideau

History

The chateau of Azay-le-Rideau was erected during the first very creative years of King Francis 1st reign. Located in Touraine, it is part of the great tradition of the Loire Valley Chateaux. Built by Gilles Berthelot, a rich financier from the local bourgeoisie, it proves the taste of the educated elite for the Italian Renaissance. The building opens the era of pleasure residences combining the charm of French chateaux to the majesty of Italian palaces.
