Chateau of Chambord

History

A true masterpiece of the Renaissance period, Chambord is the symbol of all excesses, and the most impressive château of the Loire.

Francis I, who was fond of hunting and architecture, had this gigantic monument built to match his passion.

With its 128-meter facade, 440 rooms and 365 chimneys, the chateau of Chambord is the largest of the Loire chateaus, located within a 13000-acre park (including 11000 acres of woodlands). Its surrounding wall and central keep express the power of French monarchy. The monument’s plan shows a fortified castle, including a large rectangular surrounding wall of 156 meters over 117 meters, flanked with 4 circular towers at each corner. On the north-western side stands the keep: it has huge proportions, and nearly makes up the whole castle by itself.

Be seduced by its famous double-spiral staircase, whose first sketches had been imagined by Leonardo da Vinci.
