Chateau of Villandry

History

Amongst all the Loire Valley chateaus, Villandry undoubtedly owes its fame to its exceptional terrace gardens, surrounding it like a jewel… Gardens to be admired from high above, from the belvedere, then from the ground, to appreciate all its charms and subtleties.

Completed in 1536, Villandry is the last of the great chateaux built along the River Loire, in very pure Renaissance style. It is due to Jean Le Breton, King Francis I's Secretary of State. After having been ambassador in Rome, where he had studied the art of gardens, Jean Le Breton had already taken part and managed the construction of Chambord for the King.

In the 19th century, the traditional garden was destroyed and let place to an English garden, with the style of park Monceau in Paris.

In 1906, the château was purchased by Dr Joachim Carvallo, born in Spain in 1869, great-grand-father of today’s owners. He saved the château and created today’s gardens in full harmony with the monument’s Renaissance architecture. He was to be a pioneer of the monument’s access to the public.
