A tribute to the origins of the Renaissance

What if you took time, during your visit to the Loire Valley, to review your geometry lessons? Squares, circles, rhombus, stars… In Villandry, it’s a whole universe of shapes and colors that awaits in the Renaissance gardens. When he purchases the estate in 1906, Joachim Carvalho works at giving to the Castle of Villandry the majestic look it had under the reign of King Francois I. Following a nearly scientific approach, he renders the terraces and flower beds and reinvents the decorative vegetable garden.  From this point of view, the gardens of Villandry are a true tribute to the very origins of the Renaissance gardens.

Château de Villandry

A 360° panoramic view over the gardens

Begin your visit with the magnificent interiors, from the marbled-floored dining-room to the kitchen and its collection of copper pots. Do not miss the surprising oriental living room with its remarkable 15th century Spanish-Moorish ceiling that required one year of work. The climax of your visit will definitely be the climbing on top of the old keep, where the 360° on the gardens is breathtaking!

A firework of shapes and colors

Back on the grass, take time to explore the wonderful gardens and flower beds of the Castle of Villandry. If the Jardin des Simples reminds the atmosphere of the medieval fenced monastery gardens, the Jardin du Soleil includes hundreds of perennial plants. The nine squares of the vegetable garden are a must-see in your visit. Renewed twice a year, they are a true firework of colors, shapes and flavors. Blue, red, green, orange… the interlacing of colors are a delight for the eyes !
