The chateau of Chaumont owes a part of its beauty to the wonderful site on which it stands. Erected at the end of the 15th century by the family of Amboise, it overlooks the left bank of River Loire, where the limestone plateau is the steepest. Facing the river, the chateau stands at the end of a landscape park covered with centenary trees. At its foot, on the shore, the town spreads.
The chateau has luxurious stables, designed at the end of the 19th century by Prince Amédée de Broglie. These stables accurately show the attentions of the aristocracy of the time for their horses. They were considered back then as Europe’s most luxurious, benefiting from electric lightning, just like the Garnier Opera House and Paris City Hall. The chateau offers great collections of furniture, tapestries and items of the 16th, 17th and 19th centuries.
The 19th century landscape park, designed by Henri Duchêne, overlooks the Loire Valley. Each year, from mid-April to mid-October, it is home to the International Festival of Gardens. This festival allows about twenty artists and landscapers from the whole world to conceive themed gardens. The estate’s beauty reaches its climax in autumn.
