A summary of Art History
No other Loire Valley castle offers such a view of French Art History! From your first steps in the castle’s courtyard, you will be surrounded by the pages of a giant History book. The large living room reminds the influence of the earls of Blois in the region. King Louis XII commanded the elevation of the Gothic wing in which both French architecture and Italian decorations are mixed. This very same Italy later inspired young and dashing King François I, who added a marvelous facade with its unbelievable outside staircase. The exiled Gaston d’Orleans, King Louis XIII brother, left his mark with a majestic yet unfinished classical wing.
“He looks even taller dead than alive“
Visiting Blois is above all like feeling the weight of numerous figures and events which have marked the French Kingdom. Between truth and legends, these great facts are a perfect summary of the troubled times of the Italian wars and Religious conflicts. Watch Catherine de Medici as she operates the hidden mechanism of her secret cabinet. Then follow the Duke of Guise, plotting against the king and walking across the apartments to his death. In front of the body of this murdered giant, you may use the same words as the King: “He looks even taller dead than alive”.
A festival of colors and lights
When night falls, you marvel at the extraordinary Sound and Light of the castle, telling over a thousand years of History. Covered with the king’s colors, epic battle scenes or breathtaking plots, the castle will reveal itself under fireworks of colors and lights as the most incredible History book ever written.
